Minimalism

Hey guys!

So, to start off, I wanted to discuss my design aesthetic and, really, my reason for starting this blog; minimalism. Some of you are probably thinking to yourself, "what is minimalism?", while others are probably wondering why I have a blog about it. Don't worry, I'll explain all of this! To ensure we're all on the same page, minimalism is defined as "a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity" ("Merriam-Webster"). Or, as my sister likes to say, "a room with nothing!". Now, this is obviously an exaggeration, however, compared to the typical American household, minimalist interiors appear to be far emptier. So, why am I drawn to it? And why do I feel the need to create a blog about it? Well, let me start from the beginning.

My interest in interior design began at a young age. With my dad being in the construction business, it opened doors for me to be exposed to architecture and the construction process. I was around 8 years old when my dad began to take me and my siblings through unfinished homes that he was building for clients. This might seem boring to most kids at that age, but to me it was thrilling! I loved getting to see how the framework cut out the interior floor plan of the homes and how the spaces related to each other. It was all very fascinating and really opened my eyes into this new design field that I had never known before. After being shown several of these homes, I started to watch HGTV shows when I would go to my grandmother's home (it's truly addicting!). This further developed my interest in design and I continued to research and look into this field. I had later heard of a magazine called "Architectural Digest", which features the world's most famous interior designers and their projects. This was what really helped me determine that I needed to become an interior designer. It was no longer just a fun hobby of mine to watch HGTV, or look up homes on Pinterest, it was a passion that I wanted to learn more about every day!

I had first subscribed to Architectural Digest in 2013 I believe, and haven't stopped since. After looking through magazine after magazine, I had found a particular designer who's work was so distinct and bold. I immediately was drawn to this designer because of her unique approach to her designs and the way each project had a signature "look". This designer was Jennifer Post. When I first saw her work, I had no idea what style or aesthetic she used. I was still learning these things and I wanted to learn more about her and her work. So, I went to the internet and discovered her website (http://jenniferpostdesign.com/), and looked at her bio and portfolio. She had mentioned that she was a minimalist. I had no clue what this meant, so I began to research this term. After discovering what "minimalist" meant, I began to realize why her projects were so distinct and unique. It was her use of white, the way she used less "stuff", the clean-lined furniture, the space, light, ethereal quality of her work was profound! But the effect could not be achieved without the principles of minimalism. The process of minimalism takes away all of the extra "stuff" that most people use to fill space, and replaces it with space and light. The result is a serene environment that puts more emphasis on the things that are left in the space.

This is how I became interested in minimalism. The reason I created this blog is to share my passion, aesthetic, and insight into the design world and, hopefully, build some relationships along the way! So, join me in my journey to becoming a professional interior designer and please feel free to leave a comment, or question below! Thank you!
